Elektrolyyttiympäristö refers to a medium that contains mobile ions, allowing it to conduct electricity. This electrical conductivity is the defining characteristic of an electrolyte. In such an environment, when an electric potential is applied, positive ions (cations) migrate towards the negative electrode (cathode), and negative ions (anions) move towards the positive electrode (anode). This movement of charge constitutes an electric current. Common examples of electrolyte environments include aqueous solutions of salts, acids, and bases, as well as molten ionic compounds and some solid-state materials like certain ceramics and polymers. The concentration and mobility of the ions within the electrolyte determine its conductivity.
