Elatusvastuisiin

Elatusvastuisiin is a Finnish legal term used to refer to persons who bear the obligation to provide financial maintenance to dependents under Finnish family law. The plural form elatusvastuisiin designates those individuals, typically parents, who have elatusvastuu toward their children or, in some cases, former spouses or partners with a maintenance obligation after separation or divorce.

The main forms of maintenance fall under two broad categories: child maintenance and spousal or partner maintenance. For children, elatusvastuu originates from parental responsibility and continues until the child becomes an adult or completes necessary studies, depending on the circumstances. Spousal maintenance can be ordered by a court or agreed between the parties and may be temporary or ongoing, depending on factors such as duration of the marriage, standard of living, and financial means.

Determination and enforcement of elatusvastuisiin are typically handled through private agreements or by court decision. The amount is based on factors such as the payer’s income, the number of dependents, and the needs of the recipient.
