Elatiivimuodot
Elatiivimuodot are a grammatical case found in the Finnish language. They are used to express movement or a state of being *out of* something or *from* somewhere. The elative case is often translated as "from" or "out of" in English. For example, "talosta" means "from the house" or "out of the house". This contrasts with the partitive case, which can also express movement from a place, but typically implies a less definite or partial departure. The elative case is formed by adding the ending -sta or -stä to the stem of a noun, depending on vowel harmony. If the last vowel in the noun's stem is a front vowel (e, i, ö, y, ä, œ), the ending -stä is used. If it is a back vowel (a, o, u), the ending -sta is used. Irregular nouns and loanwords may have different elative forms. The elative case is also used metaphorically, for instance, to express the origin of an idea or feeling, such as "ajatuksesta" meaning "from the thought".
