In some contexts, the term extensional relates to the concept of the "extension" of a word, which refers to the set of all things to which the word can be correctly applied. This is contrasted with the "intension" of a word, which is its meaning or definition. An extensional approach to understanding meaning focuses on what a word refers to in the real world, rather than its inherent conceptual content. For example, the extension of the word "dog" includes all individual dogs, while its intension might be something like "a domesticated carnivorous mammal."

The term can also appear in discussions of philosophy of language, where it's used to distinguish between different ways of characterizing meaning. An extensional definition would list all the members of a set, while an intensional definition would describe the properties that all members of the set share.
