Eiydintoimintojen is a Finnish term that translates to "egg cell functions" or "oocyte functions." It refers to the various biological processes and activities undertaken by an egg cell, or ovum, during its development and its role in reproduction. These functions are critical for the successful fertilization and subsequent development of a new organism.

The primary function of an egg cell is to contribute half of the genetic material required for a zygote. During oogenesis, the process of egg cell formation, the oocyte undergoes meiosis to produce a haploid cell containing a single set of chromosomes. Beyond its genetic contribution, the egg cell is a large, nutrient-rich cell. It stores essential molecules, such as proteins, lipids, and RNA, which are vital for the early stages of embryonic development before the embryo can synthesize its own nutrients.
