Eisbekämpfung refers to the measures taken to combat the negative effects of ice. This encompasses a range of strategies aimed at preventing or mitigating the formation of ice, or removing it once it has formed. The primary goal is usually to ensure safety and maintain the functionality of infrastructure and transportation.

In winter environments, eisbekämpfung is crucial for road safety. This involves the application of de-icing agents, such as salt (sodium chloride, calcium chloride) or sand, to road surfaces. These substances lower the freezing point of water, preventing ice formation or melting existing ice. Mechanical methods like plowing snow and scraping ice are also integral to keeping roads clear. On waterways, ice can pose a threat to navigation and infrastructure like bridges. Icebreaker ships are employed to clear channels and prevent the formation of thick ice dams that could lead to flooding.

Eisbekämpfung also extends to aviation, where ice accumulating on aircraft wings and other surfaces can significantly impair lift and control, leading to dangerous flight conditions. De-icing and anti-icing fluids are applied to aircraft before takeoff. In the context of buildings and infrastructure, techniques like heated surfaces or specialized coatings can be used to prevent ice buildup on roofs, walkways, and power lines.
