Einheitskugeln

Einheitskugeln, translated as "unit balls," are a fundamental concept in functional analysis and geometry. A unit ball in a normed vector space is the set of all elements whose norm is less than or equal to one. More formally, for a vector space V equipped with a norm ||.||, the unit ball B is defined as {v ∈ V | ||v|| ≤ 1}.

The shape of the unit ball can vary significantly depending on the chosen norm. In Euclidean space (ℝⁿ) with the standard Euclidean norm (the L² norm), the unit ball is the familiar sphere. However, with different norms, the unit ball can take on very different forms. For example, in ℝ² with the L¹ norm (Manhattan distance), the unit ball is a square rotated by 45 degrees. With the L∞ norm (maximum coordinate value), the unit ball is also a square, but aligned with the axes.

The properties of the unit ball, such as its convexity and its boundaries, are crucial for understanding the structure of normed spaces. The unit ball is always a convex set. The boundary of the unit ball, where ||v|| = 1, is called the unit sphere. The study of unit balls helps in characterizing different types of normed spaces and their associated topologies.
