Eignarnúmer

Eignarnúmer, often translated as registration number or license plate, is a unique identifier assigned to motor vehicles in Iceland. This alphanumeric code is crucial for the identification, registration, and tracking of vehicles within the country. The system is managed by the Icelandic Transport Authority (Samgöngustofa).

Each vehicle receives a distinct eignarnúmer upon its initial registration. This number is then permanently associated with that specific vehicle throughout its lifespan, unless a special re-registration occurs. The eignarnúmer serves a variety of purposes, including legal identification in traffic, insurance, and tax collection. Law enforcement agencies use it to identify vehicles involved in traffic violations or other incidents.

The format of an Icelandic eignarnúmer has evolved over time. Currently, it typically consists of two letters followed by three numbers, or vice versa. For example, AB 123 or 123 AB. This standardized format ensures ease of recognition and data processing. The eignarnúmer is displayed on official license plates affixed to the front and rear of the vehicle, making it readily visible. The system ensures that each vehicle can be uniquely identified within the national registry, contributing to road safety and administrative efficiency.
