They represent the basic building blocks used to design and analyze larger industrial processes. Each unit operation involves a specific transformation or separation of a substance, such as heating, cooling, mixing, separating, reacting, or drying. The concept of unit operations is crucial in chemical engineering and related fields as it allows complex processes to be broken down into manageable, standardized components.

The classification of unit operations helps in understanding and designing chemical plants. Common examples include distillation, where components of a liquid mixture are separated based on their boiling points; evaporation, which removes a solvent from a solution; filtration, which separates solids from liquids or gases; and absorption, where a component from a gas stream is dissolved into a liquid. Other examples include heat exchange, fluid flow, size reduction, and drying. By understanding the principles and behavior of each individual unit operation, engineers can effectively combine them in series or parallel to achieve a desired overall process outcome. This modular approach simplifies design, troubleshooting, and optimization.
