Eglinton

Eglinton is a name used for places and people, with origins in Scotland. The most famous use is the Eglinton Estate and Eglinton Castle near Kilwinning, in North Ayrshire, which was the seat of the Montgomerie family, Earls of Eglinton.

From the estate came the celebrated Eglinton Tournament of 1839, a grand demonstration of medievalist pageantry. After a period of neglect the castle was largely demolished, but the surrounding grounds remain as Eglinton Country Park, a public area that preserves ruins and formal gardens.

Beyond Scotland, the name Eglinton appears in other places in the British Isles and in former British territories. There is a village named Eglinton in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In Canada, Eglinton Avenue in Toronto is a major east-west route, a surviving testament to the colonial-era naming.
