Eggjastokkaörvun

Eggjastokkaörvun is a term of Icelandic origin that translates literally to "egg sac ovule development". It refers to the biological process within the ovaries of female animals where immature eggs, known as oocytes, mature and develop into a form that can be fertilized. This intricate process involves cellular growth, meiotic division, and the formation of protective layers around the oocyte.

The development begins with primordial follicles, which contain the oocytes arrested in their first meiotic division. Under hormonal influence, typically during the reproductive cycle, certain follicles are selected to begin a phase of rapid growth and differentiation. This growth involves the proliferation of granulosa cells, which surround the oocyte, and the development of a fluid-filled cavity called the antrum. The oocyte itself undergoes significant cellular changes, preparing it for ovulation.
