The Ecodesign Directive, officially known as Directive 2009/125/EC on the Ecodesign Requirements for Energy-Related Products (ErP), is a key piece of European Union legislation aimed at improving the environmental performance of energy-related products throughout their lifecycle. Introduced to replace earlier directives such as the Energy Using Products (EuP) Directive, it was adopted in 2009 and entered into force in 2010, with subsequent amendments and updates to expand its scope.

The directive sets minimum ecodesign requirements for products that significantly affect energy consumption during use, such as lighting, heating, and cooling equipment, as well as household appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions. Its primary goal is to reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance resource efficiency without compromising functionality or increasing costs disproportionately. Manufacturers must ensure their products meet these requirements before placing them on the EU market.

The Ecodesign Directive follows a lifecycle approach, considering factors such as raw material extraction, production, use, maintenance, and disposal. It encourages innovation by promoting the development of more energy-efficient and sustainable products while providing a level playing field for businesses. Compliance is enforced through market surveillance, and non-compliant products can be withdrawn from the market.

Over the years, the directive has been updated to include new product categories, such as air conditioning units, water heaters, and office equipment. It also aligns with broader EU policies, including the Energy Efficiency Directive and the Circular Economy Action Plan, to foster a more sustainable and resource-efficient economy. The directive remains a cornerstone of EU environmental policy, driving continuous improvements in product design and energy efficiency across the continent.
