EUtagállamok refers to the member states of the European Union. These are sovereign countries that have voluntarily joined together to pursue common goals and foster integration in various political, economic, and social spheres. The European Union currently comprises 27 member states, each contributing to the Union's decision-making processes and benefiting from its policies and programs. The membership of a country in the EU signifies its commitment to upholding the Union's core values, which include democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and a free market economy. The process of becoming a member state is a rigorous one, involving strict adherence to the Copenhagen criteria, which assess a country's political stability, democratic governance, and economic capacity. Once admitted, member states participate in the EU's institutions, such as the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission, where they have representation and a voice in shaping EU legislation and policy. Membership also entails obligations, including the adoption and implementation of EU law, known as the acquis communautaire, and contributions to the EU budget.
