EUMM

EUMM stands for the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia. It is a civilian monitoring mission established by the Council of the European Union in 2008 following the Russo-Georgian War. The mission's primary mandate is to observe and report on the situation on the ground in Georgia and to contribute to the stabilization, normalization, and confidence-building between the parties. EUMM operates independently and impartially, maintaining a presence across Georgia, including areas adjacent to the administrative boundary lines with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The mission's activities include patrolling, reporting on incidents, and engaging with local communities and relevant actors. EUMM aims to provide an independent and objective assessment of the situation, thereby contributing to a better understanding of the challenges and facilitating de-escalation. It also supports the implementation of agreements reached between Georgia and the Russian Federation, particularly concerning security and humanitarian issues. EUMM personnel are drawn from EU member states and are authorized to carry arms for their personal protection. The mission is headquartered in Tbilisi and maintains operational bases in various locations within Georgia. Its mandate is periodically reviewed and extended by the Council of the EU.
