EEGmerkinnät refers to the standardized system used to label and describe electroencephalogram (EEG) findings. This system facilitates consistent communication and interpretation of EEG results among neurologists, electroencephalographers, and researchers worldwide. The core of EEGmerkinnät involves classifying patterns of electrical activity in the brain.

These patterns are categorized based on their frequency, amplitude, and morphology. For instance, alpha rhythm, characterized by its typical frequency range of 8-13 Hz and its presence in the occipital regions during wakefulness, is a common EEGmerkinnät. Beta activity, faster than alpha, and theta and delta waves, which are slower, are also key components of the classification system.

Beyond normal brain rhythms, EEGmerkinnät also includes descriptions of abnormal activities. This encompasses epileptiform discharges, such as spikes and sharp waves, which are indicative of a predisposition to seizures.
