The "E2" designation signifies that this is a bimolecular elimination reaction, meaning the rate of the reaction depends on the concentration of both the substrate and the base.

E2 reactions are characterized by a concerted mechanism, where the bond breaking and bond formation occur simultaneously in a single step. This requires a specific spatial arrangement of the atoms involved. The leaving group and the hydrogen atom being abstracted must be anti-periplanar, meaning they are on opposite sides of the carbon-carbon bond and in the same plane.

A strong base is generally required to abstract the proton and initiate the elimination process. The strength of the base is a critical factor in determining whether an E2 reaction will occur over other potential reaction pathways, such as substitution reactions (SN2). Steric hindrance around the carbon atom bearing the leaving group can also influence the prevalence of E2 reactions.

The product of an E2 reaction is typically an alkene, and the regioselectivity (which alkene is formed when multiple possibilities exist) is often governed by Zaitsev's rule, which states that the more substituted alkene is usually the major product. However, with sterically hindered bases, the Hofmann product (less substituted alkene) can become the major product. E2 reactions are fundamental in organic synthesis for the formation of carbon-carbon double bonds.
