E1eliminaatioon refers to a type of unimolecular elimination reaction in organic chemistry. The "E1" designation signifies that the reaction proceeds through a unimolecular rate-determining step. This means that the slowest step in the reaction mechanism involves only one molecule.

The E1 mechanism typically occurs in two distinct steps. The first step is the ionization of the substrate, where a leaving group departs from the molecule, forming a carbocation intermediate. This step is usually the slow, rate-determining step. The second step involves the removal of a proton from an adjacent carbon atom by a base, leading to the formation of a double bond and the elimination product.

E1 elimination reactions are often favored under conditions where carbocation formation is stabilized. This includes the use of polar protic solvents, which can solvate the departing leaving group and the developing positive charge on the carbocation. Tertiary and secondary substrates are more prone to E1 reactions than primary substrates due to the greater stability of the corresponding carbocation intermediates. Strong bases are not required for E1 elimination; indeed, weak bases are often sufficient as they only need to abstract a proton from the carbocation. E1 reactions can compete with unimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN1) reactions, as both mechanisms proceed through a carbocation intermediate. The choice between E1 and SN1 often depends on the reaction conditions, particularly the presence and strength of the nucleophile/base.
