Düngemittelherstellung refers to the industrial processes involved in producing fertilizers. Fertilizers are substances that provide essential nutrients to plants, promoting their growth and improving crop yields. The primary nutrients targeted are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), often referred to as NPK.

Nitrogenous fertilizers are typically produced through the Haber-Bosch process, which synthesizes ammonia (NH3) from atmospheric nitrogen and hydrogen. This ammonia can then be converted into various forms like urea, ammonium nitrate, or ammonium sulfate. Urea is a widely used solid nitrogen fertilizer.

Phosphorus is primarily sourced from phosphate rock, which is mined and then treated with sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid to create soluble phosphate compounds. Superphosphate and triple superphosphate are common examples. Potassium fertilizers are usually derived from potash salts, which are mined and then processed to extract potassium chloride or potassium sulfate.

Compound fertilizers, containing multiple nutrients, are produced by combining single-nutrient fertilizers or through granulation processes. These processes ensure even distribution of nutrients and improve handling characteristics. The production of fertilizers is a significant industrial activity, crucial for modern agriculture and global food security. Environmental considerations, such as efficient nutrient use and waste reduction, are increasingly important aspects of modern fertilizer manufacturing.
