Därligger

Därligger is a concrete block, typically square or rectangular in shape, used in terracing and retaining wall construction. Originating in the 19th century in Sweden, this type of masonry has been employed to combat soil erosion and maintain terraced land for agriculture and horticulture.

Därligger blocks are characterized by their coarse texture and rough finish, due to their construction using local stone or gravel. The porous nature of the blocks allows for natural drainage of water, reducing the risk of water accumulation and resulting structural damage. Their weight and size provide stability for retaining walls, where gradients are steep and loading conditions are high.

When used in terracing, därligger blocks have helped mitigate soil erosion on hillsides. By allowing water to pass through the block walls, the risk of landslides and soil degradation is minimized. This has allowed farmers to cultivate land that would otherwise be unsuitable for agriculture.
