Duralverletzung

Duralverletzung refers to damage to the dura mater, the outermost of the three meninges that enclose the brain and spinal cord. This tough, fibrous membrane provides a protective barrier for the central nervous system. Injuries to the dura can occur due to various causes, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), surgical procedures, and penetrating wounds.

Symptoms of a duralverletzung can vary widely depending on the severity and location of the injury. They may include persistent headaches, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. In more severe cases, neurological deficits such as weakness, numbness, or cognitive impairment can arise. Leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the nose or ears is also a potential sign of a dural tear, particularly after head trauma.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough neurological examination and imaging studies such as CT scans or MRI to visualize the dura and surrounding structures. Treatment strategies are tailored to the specific type and extent of the duralverletzung. Minor tears may heal spontaneously, while more significant injuries often require surgical intervention to repair the dura and prevent complications like infection or CSF leakage. Management also focuses on addressing any associated brain injury and alleviating symptoms. Prognosis depends on the severity of the dural damage and the presence of other injuries.
