Duplex Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that combines two distinct ultrasound methods: B-mode imaging and Doppler ultrasound. B-mode imaging provides a two-dimensional anatomical view of the blood vessels, showing their structure, size, and any surrounding tissues. This allows the clinician to visualize the vessel wall, identify plaque buildup, and assess the overall morphology of the vessel.

Overlaying this anatomical image is the Doppler ultrasound component. Doppler ultrasound utilizes the Doppler effect, which describes the change in frequency of a sound wave as it reflects off moving objects. In this context, the moving objects are red blood cells flowing within the blood vessels. By analyzing the frequency shifts of the reflected ultrasound waves, Duplex Doppler can detect the presence, direction, and velocity of blood flow. This information is typically displayed as a color overlay on the B-mode image, with different colors representing different flow directions and the intensity of the color indicating the speed of the blood.

This combined approach provides valuable functional information about blood circulation in addition to anatomical details. It is widely used to diagnose and monitor a variety of conditions affecting arteries and veins, such as atherosclerosis, deep vein thrombosis, peripheral artery disease, and aneurysms. It can also assess blood flow after surgery or in cases of trauma. The non-ionizing nature and relative affordability of ultrasound make Duplex Doppler a common tool in vascular diagnostics.
