Dunántúlon
Dunántúl, meaning "Beyond the Danube," is a traditional geographical region of Hungary. It encompasses the western part of the country, situated west of the Danube River. This area is characterized by its rolling hills, fertile plains, and a significant portion of Hungary's wine-producing regions. The largest city in Dunántúl is Pécs, an ancient university city with a rich history and diverse cultural heritage. Other important cities include Győr, Szombathely, and Székesfehérvár. The region's landscape is varied, featuring the Transdanubian Mountains in the north and west, and the Great Hungarian Plain extending into its southern parts. Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake, is a prominent natural feature and a popular tourist destination located in the southern part of Dunántúl. Historically, Dunántúl has been a significant area for agriculture, particularly for grains and wine. The region's strategic location has also made it a crossroads of various cultures and historical events throughout Hungary's past.
