Dumnonias

Dumnonias was an ancient British kingdom and later a post-Roman Brythonic territory located in what is now Cornwall and parts of Devon in southwest England. The name is derived from the Dumnonii tribe who inhabited the region. Following the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the early 5th century AD, the area likely continued to be governed by native rulers, forming a successor kingdom.

Little is definitively known about the early history of Dumnonias, with much of our understanding coming from later Welsh and English sources. It is believed to have been a significant power in the region during the sub-Roman period. By the 8th century, the territory appears to have been gradually encroached upon and eventually absorbed by the expanding Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. Archaeological evidence, such as inscribed stones and settlement patterns, provides some insight into the life and culture of the Dumnonians. The legacy of Dumnonias is primarily preserved in the linguistic and cultural landscape of Cornwall and parts of Devon.
