Dukeries

The Dukeries is a historical area in Nottinghamshire, England, roughly corresponding to the extent of Sherwood Forest. Its name derives from the fact that several great noble families, including the Dukes of Norfolk, Portland, and Newcastle, owned country houses within this relatively small region. These estates, with their associated ancient woodlands, shaped the landscape and character of the area for centuries. The term "Dukeries" itself came into common usage during the 19th century.

The prominent estates that defined the Dukeries included Welbeck Abbey, Clumber Park, Thoresby Hall, and Rufford Abbey. These were centres of aristocratic life, employing many local people and influencing the development of nearby villages. The ancient oaks of Sherwood Forest were a notable feature, attracting visitors and contributing to the romantic image of the region, often associated with Robin Hood.

By the mid-20th century, many of these grand houses and their estates had changed hands or were dismantled. Clumber Park and Thoresby Hall, for example, are now managed by the National Trust. While the great ducal residences are largely gone or altered, the term "Dukeries" continues to evoke a sense of this significant aristocratic and sylvan heritage within Nottinghamshire. The area remains popular for its natural beauty and historical connections.
