Druckbehandlung

Druckbehandlung, also known as pressure treatment, is a technique used to impregnate wood with preservatives or other chemicals under pressure. This process is crucial for enhancing the durability and lifespan of timber, particularly when it is exposed to moisture, insects, or fungal decay.

The core principle of Druckbehandlung involves placing wood into a sealed cylinder, known as an autoclave. Air is then extracted from the wood cells, creating a vacuum. Subsequently, the preservative solution is introduced into the cylinder, and pressure is applied. This pressure forces the liquid deep into the wood's cellular structure, ensuring thorough impregnation. Once the desired penetration is achieved, the pressure is released, and any excess preservative is removed.

Different types of preservatives can be used depending on the intended application and the level of protection required. Common examples include copper-based compounds, which offer protection against fungi and insects, and fire retardants. The depth and distribution of the preservative within the wood are key indicators of the treatment's effectiveness.

Druckbehandlung is widely employed in various industries, including construction for structural timber, fencing, and garden furniture. It is also used for railway sleepers and utility poles. The process significantly reduces the need for frequent replacement of wooden elements, contributing to sustainability by extending the service life of timber products.
