These three lights are typically a key light, a fill light, and a backlight, each serving a specific purpose in shaping the subject and its environment.

The key light is the primary and strongest light source. It is usually positioned to one side of the subject, at an angle of roughly 45 degrees, and is responsible for defining the subject's form and features. The fill light is less intense than the key light and is placed opposite the key light.
