The conventions vary by medium: theatre relies on live performance, stagecraft, and audience immediacy; cinema and television emphasize editing, pacing, and visual storytelling. Common craft elements include character, plot, setting, dialogue, and theme. Dramaturgy often follows a structure with setup, rising action, climax, and resolution in theatre, or acts and scenes in stage plays and episodes or sequences in film and TV. Directors, writers, and actors collaborate to create emotional engagement, conflict, and insight into human behavior.

Dramas reflect and shape culture, addressing social issues, personal relationships, and ethical dilemmas. They can be adapted across media and eras, from classical stage tragedies to contemporary television dramas and streamed films. The form's enduring appeal lies in its focus on character development and the exploration of consequences arising from human choices.
