It is generally considered bacteriostatic and has a broad spectrum. Resistance can develop via efflux pumps and ribosomal protection proteins; cross-resistance can occur with other tetracyclines. Responsible use and adherence to guidelines help mitigate resistance.

Safety and precautions: Common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and photosensitivity. Esophageal irritation can occur if a tablet is taken without sufficient fluids. In young children and during pregnancy, doxycycline may affect bone and teeth development and is typically avoided unless clearly necessary. Absorption can be reduced by antacids, calcium, iron, and dairy products.

Regulatory and handling notes: Doxycycline-containing products are usually prescription-based in many jurisdictions. Labels specify the strength, form, and dosing guidance, along with storage instructions (typically at room temperature, away from light) and reminders to complete the course unless directed otherwise.
