Douhet

Giulio Douhet (1869–1930) was an Italian general and a pioneering theorist of air power. He is best known for arguing that control of the air could determine the outcome of war and should be developed into an independent arm of the military.

In his seminal work Il dominio dell'aria (The Command of the Air), published in 1921, Douhet argued that modern warfare would be won by achieving command of the air and then delivering strategic bombardment against an enemy's population and economic infrastructure. He believed aerial bombardment could bypass traditional battlefronts, cripple industry, and compel political surrender without a decisive ground campaign. He also advocated for a centralized, independent air force capable of sustained strategic operations and for the concentration of air power in a decisive strike.

Influence and reception: Douhet's ideas shaped interwar military planning in Italy and influenced air power thinking worldwide, contributing to the emphasis on strategic bombing and air superiority in doctrine. His work influenced supporters of air power in several countries, including the United States.

Criticism: Critics argue that Douhet overestimated the speed and destructiveness of air power, underestimated defense capabilities, and overemphasized morale effects on civilian populations. World War II demonstrated that bombing's impact on war outcomes was complex and costly, with defenses, logistics, geography, and industrial resilience mitigating losses.
