Dotsalong

Dotsalong is a term used in vector graphics and computational geometry to describe a technique for generating a sequence of discrete points, or dots, positioned along a curve, polyline, or boundary at a regular spacing. The result is a dotted representation of the original path, which can be used as a stroke effect, a sampling method for manufacturing, or an aesthetic in digital art.

Algorithmically, dotsalong typically proceeds by parameterizing the target path by arc length, choosing a spacing value s, and placing a point at the start then at every s units along the curve until the end is reached. Variants may adjust dot size, spacing, orientation to the tangent, and whether endpoints are included. Some implementations allow optional jitter, color variation, or size gradients to create visual texture. In raster and vector renderers, the dots can be drawn as filled circles, small discs, or markers.

Applications include font and icon design, textile pattern generation, CNC milling or laser engraving where discrete contact points are used, and artistic effects such as pointillist rendering. In digital graphics, dotsalong can complement or substitute dash patterns by substituting line segments with circular marks.
