Dot matrix printers are a type of impact printer that produces characters and images by striking an ink-soaked ribbon against paper. This striking mechanism involves a print head containing a matrix of pins. When a character or image needs to be printed, specific pins are extended and retracted to form the desired pattern. The movement of these pins against the ribbon transfers ink, creating the visible output on the paper.

These printers were once the standard for many printing applications due to their durability and cost-effectiveness. They were widely used for printing documents, receipts, and even multipart forms, as the impact of the pins could penetrate multiple layers of carbonless copy paper. The quality of print was generally lower than that of laser or inkjet printers, characterized by a distinctive pixelated appearance.

Dot matrix printers operate by moving the print head horizontally across the page, line by line. The selection and firing of the pins within the print head are controlled by the printer's internal electronics, which interpret the data received from a connected computer. While largely superseded by newer printing technologies for most home and office uses, dot matrix printers can still be found in specialized environments where their ability to print on continuous fanfold paper or multipart forms is advantageous, such as in industrial settings or for certain point-of-sale systems.
