Doppelstunden

Doppelstunden, singular Doppelstunde, is a term used in German-speaking education to denote a block of teaching time that equals two normal lessons. The word combines Doppel- (double) and Stunde (hour or lesson). The concept is common in several Länder and cantons, where it is used to organize the timetable.

Traditionally, a standard Unterrichtsstunde lasts about 45 minutes in many German-speaking countries. A Doppelstunde thus equates to roughly 90 minutes of instruction. The exact duration can vary by region and school policy, and some institutions schedule two 45-minute blocks back-to-back with a short break between them rather than a single uninterrupted 90-minute block. The format is commonly employed for subjects that benefit from longer, uninterrupted time, such as laboratory work, arts, or practical sessions, and may be used in primary and secondary education.

In timetabling, a Doppelstunde is treated as a single block within the daily schedule, affecting the number of periods per day and the length of breaks. Advantages include the ability to conduct extended activities, more in-depth coverage, and smoother transitions for certain tasks. Disadvantages include increased fatigue for students, reduced flexibility for substitutions or timetable changes, and potential scheduling rigidity.
