Dongola
Dongola is a town in Upper Nubia, located on the Nile River in the Northern State of Sudan. Historically, it was the capital of the medieval Kingdom of Makuria, a powerful Christian Nubian state that flourished from the 6th to the 14th century. The ruins of Old Dongola, situated a few kilometers north of the modern town, are a significant archaeological site revealing the grandeur of this ancient kingdom. Excavations have uncovered remains of churches, palaces, and fortifications, providing insights into the political, religious, and social life of Makuria.
The town of Dongola itself has served as an important administrative and commercial center throughout history.
