Domänenmikroskopie refers to a set of techniques used to visualize and study magnetic domains within materials. Magnetic domains are regions where the magnetic moments of atoms are aligned in the same direction. The boundaries between these domains are called domain walls. Understanding the behavior and structure of these domains is crucial for developing and improving magnetic materials used in various applications, such as data storage, sensors, and actuators.

Several microscopy techniques can be employed for domain visualization. One common method is Lorentz microscopy, which utilizes the interaction of electrons with the magnetic field of the domains. In Lorentz microscopy, the electron beam is slightly defocused, causing electrons passing through different magnetic domains to deflect at different angles. This deflection leads to contrast in the resulting image, allowing the visualization of domain structures and domain walls. Another technique is Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM), a type of scanning probe microscopy. MFM uses a sharp magnetic tip that scans the surface of the material. The magnetic forces between the tip and the magnetic domains on the sample surface cause a deflection in the cantilever holding the tip. This deflection is detected and mapped to create an image of the magnetic domain structure. Other methods include Kerr microscopy, which uses the magneto-optical Kerr effect to detect magnetic signals, and electron holography, which can provide quantitative information about the magnetic flux density. The choice of microscopy technique depends on the specific material, the desired resolution, and the type of information required.
