Domitius

Domitius is a Latin nomen belonging to the Roman gens Domitia, a family that included both patrician and plebeian branches. The Domitii produced statesmen, military leaders, and jurists from the Roman Republic into the early Empire. The feminine form Domitia was used by several noblewomen associated with the same lineage.

Notable members with the nomen Domitius include Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, who served as consul in 96 BCE and was an influential figure of the late Republic; his son, Nero Claudius Domitius Ahenobarbus, better known as the emperor Nero, who was born of that line and later adopted by Claudius to become Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus. In the mid first century AD, Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo rose to prominence as a general and consul in 51 AD, renowned for his campaigns in Germania and Armenia before his death in 67 AD. Another prominent Domitius is Ulpian (Domitius Ulpianus), a jurist of the late 2nd and early 3rd centuries whose legal writings influenced Roman law for generations.

The Domitii thus appear across Republican and Imperial Rome in multiple high offices, military commands, and legal scholarship. In later periods, the feminine form Domitia continued to be used for noblewomen within the broader Domitian lineage and allied families, reflecting the long-standing presence of the nomen in Roman elite society.
