Dodecanoates

Dodecanoates are a class of chemical compounds that are esters of dodecanoic acid, also known as lauric acid. Dodecanoic acid is a saturated fatty acid with a twelve-carbon chain. Its chemical formula is CH3(CH2)10COOH. When it reacts with an alcohol, it forms a dodecanoate ester.

Dodecanoates are commonly found in nature, particularly in fats and oils derived from plants and animals. Lauric acid, the parent acid, is abundant in coconut oil and palm kernel oil. As a result, dodecanoates derived from these sources are often components of soaps, detergents, and cosmetics due to their surfactant properties, meaning they can help reduce surface tension between liquids or between a liquid and a solid. They are also used as emulsifiers, helping to mix substances that would not normally mix, such as oil and water. Some dodecanoates may also find applications as plasticizers or lubricants.
