Practically, documentarians conduct research, shoot footage, interview subjects, and edit to build a narrative. They may employ observational, participatory, expository, or reflexive modes, and often use archival material, graphics, or data to support their storytelling.

Historically, the documentary film emerged in the early 20th century, with the term popularized by John Grierson to describe films that educated public opinion. Today, the terms 'documentarian' and 'documentary filmmaker' are largely interchangeable, though some makers emphasize advocacy or analytical perspective over neutral reportage.

Notable practitioners include D. A. Pennebaker, the Maysles brothers, Michael Moore, Errol Morris, Ken Burns, and Louis Theroux. Their works cover social issues, history, and investigative subjects, reflecting a spectrum from intimate portraits to broader public concerns. Ethical considerations—such as consent, representation, and potential harm—are central to responsible documentary practice.
