Dithmarschers
Dithmarschers are the inhabitants of Dithmarschen, a region located in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Historically, Dithmarschen was a de facto independent peasant republic for several centuries, a unique political entity in medieval and early modern Europe. Its inhabitants were known for their strong sense of independence and their ability to defend their territory against external threats. The fertile marshlands of Dithmarschen, reclaimed from the North Sea, were crucial to their agricultural economy, particularly for growing crops and raising livestock.
The social structure of Dithmarschen was characterized by a relatively egalitarian peasant society, with significant self-governance.
Today, the term Dithmarschers refers to the people living in the modern administrative district of Dithmarschen.
