Distortionsphenomena refer to effects in which an original signal, image, or perceptual input is altered by the action of a medium, device, or cognitive process. The term is used across disciplines to describe discrepancies between an intended form and observed outcomes, arising from nonlinearities, sampling limitations, propagation effects, or biases.

In optics and imaging, distortion includes geometric distortion (barrel and pincushion) and chromatic aberration, as well as atmospheric seeing that degrades astronomical images. In acoustics and audio electronics, nonlinearities produce harmonic and intermodulation distortion, while sampling and quantization introduce digital distortion. In photography and video, compression artifacts can also be viewed as distortion phenomena, varying with codecs and bitrates.

In communications and signal processing, channel distortion arises from impedance mismatches, multipath, or fading; adaptive equalizers and pre/post processing are used to mitigate these effects. Measuring distortion uses metrics such as total harmonic distortion (THD), intermodulation distortion (IMD), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and perceptual metrics like structural similarity (SSIM).

In human perception, distortions arise from cognitive biases, context effects, optical illusions, or linguistic reinterpretation, leading to differences between stimuli and reported experience. Perceptual distortions can influence visual interpretation, auditory judgments, and user experiences with media.

Mitigation of distortions typically involves calibration, modeling of nonlinearities, feedback control, dithering, or corrective filtering. The concept of distortionsphenomena remains broad; in practice, disciplines prefer domain-specific terms such as distortion, artifacts, or biases to describe particular effects.
