Dispersiovaikutus, also known as dispersion effect, refers to the phenomenon where the speed of a wave depends on its frequency. This occurs in a medium where the refractive index or other properties vary with wavelength. For electromagnetic waves, such as light, dispersion causes different colors (which have different wavelengths) to travel at slightly different speeds through a material. This leads to the separation of white light into its constituent colors, a process observed in prisms, where it is called chromatic dispersion.

In optics, dispersion is responsible for the formation of rainbows and the operation of devices like spectrometers, which use prisms or gratings to analyze light based on its wavelength. The amount of dispersion a material exhibits is quantified by its dispersion relation, which describes how the wave's phase velocity changes with frequency. Materials with high dispersion will separate wavelengths more significantly than materials with low dispersion.

Beyond light, the concept of dispersion applies to other types of waves as well, including sound waves and waves on water. In each case, it signifies a frequency-dependent propagation speed within the medium. This frequency dependence can lead to the distortion of wave packets as their different frequency components travel at different speeds, causing the packet to spread out over time.
