This reduces agglomeration and helps achieve uniform distribution of pigments, fillers, or other solids in a medium.

Dispersants come in several forms. Surfactant-based dispersants use surface-active molecules to lower interfacial tension and provide steric or electrostatic stabilization. Polymeric dispersants rely on long-chain polymers or polycarboxylates that adsorb to particle surfaces and create steric hindrance or charge repulsion. Inorganic dispersants, including certain phosphates and silicates, act through surface charge modification and hydration effects. The choice of dispersant depends on the system’s solvent, pH, ionic strength, particle type, and processing conditions.

Applications are widespread. In paints and coatings, dispersants prevent pigment agglomeration for color and opacity stability. In cement and concrete, dispersants improve flow and reduce water requirements. Other uses include inks, plastics and composites, ceramics, and some food and pharmaceutical emulsions where stable dispersion is essential. Selection considerations include compatibility with the formulation, processing temperature, and regulatory or environmental constraints.

Environmental and regulatory aspects vary by chemical type. Some dispersants are readily biodegradable, while others may persist or pose aquatic toxicity concerns, prompting assessment under regulations such as REACH or TSCA.
