By injecting fuel precisely when and where it is needed, manufacturers can optimize the combustion process, reducing fuel consumption. This technology also contributes to increased engine power and torque. The cooling effect of the evaporating fuel within the combustion chamber allows for higher compression ratios, further enhancing performance.

Another advantage is reduced emissions. Direct injection systems enable more complete combustion and allow for the use of technologies like exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) more effectively, helping to lower the output of certain pollutants. However, direct injection engines can sometimes produce higher particulate matter emissions, which has led to the development of specialized particulate filters.

This technology is widely used in modern gasoline engines, often referred to as Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), and has also been a feature of diesel engines for many years. The implementation of direct injection requires sophisticated fuel pumps and injectors capable of operating at very high pressures to ensure proper atomization and distribution of the fuel.
