Diplonttiseen refers to a stage in the life cycle of certain organisms, particularly those exhibiting alternation of generations, a phenomenon observed in plants, algae, and some fungi. The term originates from the Greek words *diplo-* (meaning double) and *-nt-* (related to nucleus), indicating a phase where the organism possesses a diploid set of chromosomes, meaning each cell contains two complete sets of genetic material, one from each parent.

In the context of alternation of generations, diplontic life cycles are characterized by a dominant diploid phase, where the organism spends most of its life cycle in the diploid state. This phase begins with the fertilization of a haploid gamete by another haploid gamete, producing a diploid zygote. The zygote then undergoes mitotic divisions to form a multicellular diploid organism, such as a sporophyte in plants. The diploid organism produces haploid spores through meiosis, which then develop into haploid gametophytes. The gametophytes generate gametes, completing the cycle.

Diplontic life cycles are common in certain groups of algae, such as red algae (Rhodophyta), where the sporophyte is the only multicellular phase, and the gametophyte is reduced to a single cell. This contrasts with other life cycles, such as haplontic or haplo-diplontic, where the haploid phase may be more prominent or equally dominant. The diplontic pattern reflects evolutionary adaptations that may favor the stability and robustness of the diploid state, as diploid cells can mask recessive mutations through dominance.
