Dioptrické

Dioptrické refers to lenses or optical instruments that have a measurable refractive power, expressed in diopters. This unit of measurement quantifies how strongly a lens converges or diverges light. A positive diopter value indicates a converging lens, used to correct hyperopia (farsightedness) or presbyopia. A negative diopter value indicates a diverging lens, used to correct myopia (nearsightedness).

The dioptric power of a lens is inversely proportional to its focal length. For example, a lens with a focal length of 1 meter has a power of +1 diopter if it converges light and -1 diopter if it diverges light. This relationship is fundamental to understanding how eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other optical devices work to correct vision impairments.

In ophthalmology and optometry, dioptric measurements are crucial for prescribing corrective lenses. An eye examination determines the precise dioptric power needed for each eye to achieve clear vision. This prescription specifies the sphere (for spherical correction), cylinder (for astigmatism correction), and axis (orientation of astigmatism correction), all expressed in diopters. Beyond vision correction, dioptric power is also a key characteristic of telescopes, microscopes, and cameras, influencing their magnification and image quality.
