Dioptriamäärät

Dioptriamäärät, often referred to as diopters, are a unit of measurement used in optics to express the refractive power of a lens. A diopter quantifies how strongly a lens converges or diverges light. A positive diopter value indicates a converging lens, typically used to correct farsightedness (hyperopia). A negative diopter value indicates a diverging lens, used to correct nearsightedness (myopia).

The diopter value is calculated as the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens in meters. For example, a lens with a focal length of 0.5 meters has a refractive power of 1/0.5 = 2 diopters. Conversely, a lens with a focal length of -1 meter has a refractive power of 1/-1 = -1 diopter. Higher positive diopter values mean stronger converging lenses, while higher negative diopter values mean stronger diverging lenses.

In optometry and ophthalmology, prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses are described using dioptriamäärät. These values help optometrists and ophthalmologists determine the precise correction needed for a patient's vision. For instance, a prescription might read -2.00 D for myopia or +1.50 D for hyperopia. Astigmatism, an irregular curvature of the eye's cornea or lens, is corrected using cylindrical lenses, which also have dioptriamäärät, often specified with an axis.
