Dimitsana

Dimitsana is a mountain village in Arcadia, in the central Peloponnese, Greece. It is situated in the western highlands above the river Lousios, at roughly 900 meters above sea level. The village is part of the municipality of Gortynia and the regional unit of Arcadia, and serves as the seat of the Dimitsana municipal unit. It is a traditional stone-built settlement surrounded by forests and is known for its scenic landscapes and proximity to the Lousios Gorge.

Historically, Dimitsana developed as a religious and commercial center in the Ottoman era and became associated with the Greek Enlightenment and the early years of the Greek War of Independence. The village preserves a number of historic houses and narrow streets that reflect its past. It hosts the Dimitsana Library, one of the region's principal archives of manuscripts and early printed books, and the Open Air Water-Power Museum, which exhibits ancient hydraulic mills and devices used to harness water power for milling and other crafts.

Present-day Dimitsana relies on tourism, agriculture, and forestry. Visitors come to explore the old town, the nearby monasteries and the gorge, and to learn about the local history at the library and the museum. The village is accessible by road from Tripoli and is a common stop on tours of Arcadia.
