Dimensjonssystemer, often translated as dimensional systems, refer to the frameworks used to describe and quantify physical quantities. These systems are based on fundamental dimensions, such as length, mass, and time, from which all other physical quantities can be derived. The most common dimensional system in use today is the International System of Units (SI), which is built upon seven base dimensions: meter for length, kilogram for mass, second for time, ampere for electric current, kelvin for thermodynamic temperature, mole for amount of substance, and candela for luminous intensity.

The concept of dimensional homogeneity is crucial in physics and engineering. It states that an equation is physically meaningful only if the dimensions on both sides are the same. For example, in the equation distance = speed × time, the dimension of distance (length, L) is equal to the dimension of speed (length per time, L/T) multiplied by the dimension of time (T), resulting in L = (L/T) × T = L. This principle helps in checking the correctness of formulas and in deriving relationships between physical quantities.

Other dimensional systems exist, though they are less prevalent. The CGS (centimeter-gram-second) system, for instance, was historically important and is still used in some specialized fields. The choice of a dimensional system depends on the context and the specific requirements of a scientific or engineering discipline. Regardless of the system, the underlying principle of representing complex quantities through fundamental dimensions remains consistent, providing a universal language for describing the physical world.
