Dihidroxiaceto
Dihydroxyacetone, often abbreviated as DHA, is a simple carbohydrate molecule. It is a triose, meaning it is a monosaccharide with three carbon atoms. Chemically, it is the dimer of glyceraldehyde. Dihydroxyacetone is the most common active ingredient in sunless tanning products. When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, through a Maillard reaction. This reaction produces melanoidins, which are brown pigments that give the skin a tanned appearance. The tan produced by DHA is temporary and typically lasts for a few days as the skin cells naturally exfoliate.
Dihydroxyacetone is also found naturally in some plants and is produced by certain bacteria. It can be
