Digresser

Digresser refers to the act of deviating from the main topic or subject in a conversation or piece of writing. The term "digresser" originates from the Latin word "digredi," meaning to step aside or wander. In rhetoric, a digression is a literary device where the speaker or writer temporarily leaves the main argument to address a related or unrelated point. This can be intentional, to provide a pause or a different perspective, or unintentional, due to a lack of focus or organization.

In casual conversation, digressing is common and often a natural part of how people communicate. However, in more formal settings, such as academic presentations or professional meetings, digressing is generally discouraged as it can be seen as unprofessional or unprepared. Effective communicators aim to stay on topic and deliver their message clearly and concisely, while still allowing for brief, relevant tangents if they enhance understanding or engagement. Recognizing when and how to digress, or to avoid it altogether, is a key aspect of good communication skills.
