This concentration gradient is established through processes such as doping or the application of light.

Examples of diffusion-type phenomena and devices include the operation of p-n junctions, where the diffusion of majority carriers across the junction creates a depletion region and a built-in electric field. Photodiodes and solar cells also exhibit diffusion-type behavior, as they generate electron-hole pairs that then diffuse to the contacts, producing an electrical current. Transistors, such as bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), utilize diffusion for the transport of minority carriers across the base region, which is crucial for their amplification capabilities.
